Reports to: Salsbury Community Society Board of Directors


Work location: Hybrid. Primary office is the Co:here building, 1723 Victoria Drive. From time to time and as aligned with policy and direction of the board, the Executive Director (ED) may work from home.

Occasionally, the ED will be required to attend meetings at various locations in the Lower Mainland.


Job Summary: The Executive Director is responsible for leading the Salsbury Community Society (SCS) in achieving its mission of being a different kind of housing operator and landlord. We operate small scale and medium density housing that is grounded in relationships rather than social services. We care deeply about providing affordable housing, fostering a sense of belonging for people from diverse backgrounds, the sustainability of the buildings and operations, and the well-being of our staff. The Executive Director will provide strategic direction, oversee operations, and ensure financial sustainability.


Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Leadership and Strategic Direction

  • Develop action plans to and implement SCS’s a strategic plan in alignment with the that aligns with the Salsbury Community Society's mission and vision.

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and supervision to the Salsbury Community Society staff and volunteers and build a strong organizational culture.

  • Build partnerships with community organizations and stakeholders to advance the organization's mission, implement the strategic plan, and increase organizational impact.

  • Effectively communicate the values, goals and achievements of the organization to new audiences.

  • Help inspire a culture of neighbourliness and collaboration among staff and tenants. Meet regularly with the Executive Committee, Staff and the Community Builders Group (tenants) to discuss goals and deliverables.

  • Operations Management

  • Oversee and participate in the day-to-day operations of the Salsbury Community Society, including property management, tenant relations, community programming, and human resources.

  • Ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements, including tenancy laws, health and safety regulations, financial reporting requirements, and employment legislation among others.

  • Develop and implement policies and procedures and ensure regular amendments, when required, to ensure efficient and effective operations

  • Ensure that the Salsbury Community Society's properties are well-maintained and meet the needs of tenants.

  • Oversee the implementation of the organization's human resources policies and procedures (e.g., recruitment and release, coaching and mentoring, performance management, employment documentation, etc.).

  • Financial Management

  • Develop and manage the Salsbury Community Society's annual budget and financial plans.

  • Oversee the financial sustainability of the organization in the short and long term. This includes participating in annual rent reviews, external reviews, and the annual budget process.

  • Develop and implement fundraising strategies to secure funding from private donors, foundations and other sources.

  • Ensure that all financial reporting and record-keeping is accurate and up-to-date.

  • Board of Directors Support

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure that the organization is meeting its strategic goals. This includes providing regular updates to the Board on the organization's operations, finances, and progress towards its goals.

  • Support the Board in fulfilling its governance responsibilities, including developing policies and procedures, and monitoring organizational performance.

Qualifications:

  • Education

  • Bachelor's degree in a field such as business administration, urban planning, policy, social work or other relevant field.

  • Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role, preferably in the non-profit sector.

  • Skills, abilities and knowledge

  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, forecasting, and fundraising

  • Knowledge of affordable housing and community development issues

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders

  • Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with the Google Suite, Quickbooks

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate staff and volunteers

  • Experience working with a Board of Directors

  • Character and attitude

  • Team player who is committed to working collaboratively with staff, volunteers, board and committee members to achieve goals and objectives.

  • Self-motivated, strong and confident leader who takes initiative, sets the tone and can inspire and motivate staff, volunteers, funders and stakeholders.

  • Humble, willing to listen and learn from others, with a focus on community needs over personal interests.

  • Adaptable in the face of quickly changing circumstances, and a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

  • High emotional intelligence (e.g., empathize with others, understand their perspectives, and build positive relationships based on trust and respect).

  • Committed to social justice and have a passion for creating communities that are inclusive and welcoming to all.

This is a full-time (35 hours/week) position with a competitive salary and benefits package for organizations of similar size.
